BRAMPTON, Ont. — Parmalat Canada Inc., a Canada-wide producer of milk and dairy products, fruit juices and table spreads, was fined $290,000 on Jan. 14 after pleading guilty to safety violations that led to the death of a worker. On Oct. 25, 2012, a Parmalat worker entered a mobile sales truck parked on the grounds of the company’s facility at 16 Shaftsbury Lane in Brampton to purchase safety shoes, Ontario’s Ministry of Labour (MOL) said in a press release. By the time the worker emerged to walk back inside the building, a subcontractor had driven a tractor trailer and stopped beside the sales truck. The tractor trailer driver began to reverse into an adjacent loading dock, striking the Parmalat worker, who succumbed to his injuries. The MOL investigation found that there had been no signaller present to direct the tractor trailer, as required by Section 56 of the Industrial Establishments Regulation.
