Construction employer fined after board strikes worker’s head

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – The Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety has ordered the owner of a Prince Albert construction firm to pay a $14,000 fine, following an accident that injured a worker early last year. According to an April 25 news release from the Ministry, Danbo Construction was working on a project in Emma Lake on Jan. 8, 2016, when a board slipped off a roof and struck an employee in the head. The injury was serious because the worker was not wearing head protection at the time, the release noted. On April 13 of this year, Danbo owner Daniel Manary pleaded guilty to failing to provide a suitable liner in head protection to protect an employee from cold weather and failing to secure protective headwear onto an employee’s head with a retention system to prevent the headwear from dislodging. “While everyone is responsible to create and maintain a safe and healthy workplace,” the Ministry stated, “employers carry the greatest responsibility because of their authority and control over the worksite.” Manary’s total fine included a $4,000 surcharge.
