University of Manitoba fined $13,000 for falling incident in 2014

WINNIPEG, Man. – The University of Manitoba was recently convicted for its role in an employee’s falling injury in 2014. A May 9 news release from Workplace Safety and Health (WSH), the provincial government division for occupational safety, stated that the incident had occurred on Aug. 19, 2014, when workers were about to lower a 1,000-kilogram spool of wire to the basement of the Power House Building at the institution’s Fort Garry campus. The workers removed two access panels from the first-storey floor and then went to get the spool; while they were gone, another worker fell 4.4 metres through the opening to the basement floor and was seriously injured. On April 20 of this year, the University pleaded guilty to failing to have a guardrail system in place to protect employees from a floor opening, a violation of Section 4(1)(a) of the province’s Workplace Safety and Health Act. WSH fined the company $13,000, including surcharges. “Workplace Safety and Health… is reminding employers to ensure workplaces are safe and that workers are trained to perform their duties safely,” WSH stated in the release.
