Taseko’s Gibraltar mine wins safety award

British Columbia’s Ministry of Energy and Mines has presented the John Ash Safety Award for 2014 to Taseko Mines Limited, for its copper-molybdenum mine in Gibraltar. This award, one of the Ministry’s annual Mine Safety Awards, goes to the B.C. mining operation that achieves the lowest injury-frequency rate within at least one million work hours over the course of a year. The Gibraltar mine had zero lost-time injuries in 1.7 million hours of work in 2014, according to a March 31 press release from Taseko. “We are proud of our employees for this accomplishment and their ongoing commitment to health and safety,” said Taseko president and CEO Russell Hallbauer, as quoted in the release. “Operating with employee health and safety and the environment held paramount is the foundation of a world-class operation. We do not take safety for granted, and it is a concerted effort to ensure that safety is at the forefront of every employee’s decision and action.” The Ministry has been presenting its Mine Safety Awards since 1961.
