Pilot killed in plane crash while fighting wildfire

COLD LAKE, Alta. – The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has deployed a team of investigators to the site of a plane crash that killed a pilot on May 22. A media release from the Alberta government, sent out the following day, noted that the victim had been fighting a wildfire in an area near Cold Lake. Media reports have identified the pilot as a 37-year-old employee of Conair Aerial Firefighting, although his name has not been released to the public. Alberta’s newly elected Premier Rachel Notley, who had not yet taken office, issued a press statement on May 23 offering condolences on behalf of the government to the pilot’s family, friends and colleagues. “First responders like this pilot… put their lives on the line every day to ensure that our homes and families are safe. We owe them our most sincere gratitude,” Notley said. “In light of this tragedy, I remind all Albertans to respect the fire restrictions that are now in place to reduce the risk to our first responders and our communities.” The TSB is in the process of gathering information to evaluate the incident, according to a Board press release dated May 22.
