Police apprehend man suspected of taxi robbery

CALGARY, Alta. – A taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint on the early morning of Aug. 21, according to information from the Calgary Police Service (CPS). At about 2:30 a.m. that day, a cab in the southeast section of Calgary picked up a man who asked to be taken to a specific intersection nearby, a CPS media release stated. At the intersection, the passenger pulled out a knife and demanded cash from the driver. The passenger then ordered the driver to exit the taxi, stepped into the driver’s seat and drove away, police said. There were no injuries in the incident. Following the robbery, CPS officers located the cab at a nearby gas station and subsequently caught a 20-year-old suspect nearby, with the help of a canine unit. Police have charged the man, whose name has not been released publicly, with one count of robbery and three of breach of probation. An investigation by the CPS Centralized General Investigations Section is ongoing.
