Inquest called into death of construction worker/musician

OTTAWA, Ont. – Ontario’s Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services (MCSCS) has declared that a mandatory inquest into the April 21, 2014 death of construction worker and singer-songwriter Marc Robert Nelson will take place in the near future. The 44-year-old Ottawa native was killed as a result of a workplace accident at his place of employment, according to a Sept. 10 news release from the MCSCS. Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion, who is the regional supervising coroner for the province’s east region at the Ministry’s Ottawa Office, announced that the date, location, presiding coroner and other relevant information would be released later. The inquest, which is required under the Coroners Act, is intended to examine the circumstances surrounding Nelson’s death and to allow a jury to recommend ways to prevent similar worksite fatalities in the future. Nelson had performed music live since the seventh grade and played gigs in a wide variety of venues, from bars and funerals to weddings and bingo halls, according to information from a website devoted to his memory.
