Labour Minister urges lobster-fishing community to stay safe

HALIFAX, N.S. – The Nova Scotia Government is reminding lobster fishers to stay safe on the job as lobster season officially begins in the province. The Ministry of Labour and Advanced Education put out a news release on Nov. 27, stating that the N.S. fishing industry had seen significant improvements in safety, including a notable drop in lost work time due to injury, but that further reductions in workplace fatalities and injuries were necessary. “Fishermen have led the change to improve safety across the fishing industry with more man-overboard training and an increased use of personal flotation devices,” said provincial Labour and Advanced Education Minister Kelly Regan in a press statement. “I urge all fishermen to continue with the great progress they’ve made and keep safety a priority as they head out to sea this season.” The message was part of the government’s Workplace Safety Strategy; the Ministry has been working with the fishing industry and other stakeholders to follow 33 recommendations of a safety plan, Fishing Safety Now, which was launched in June of this year.
