Two men convicted of robbery, assault against transit workers

TORONTO, Ont. – Two men have been sentenced to prison terms for unrelated crimes against employees of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), according to a Jan. 26 news release from Toronto’s transit authority. In one of the cases, 56-year-old James Lavoie is to serve 88 days in jail (with time in custody already served) for an incident on Nov. 21, when he assaulted a TTC worker at Don Mills Station in the north part of the city. That day, Lavoie tried to enter the subway station twice without paying any fare, the TTC stated; when the fare collector confronted him, Lavoie swore at the employee and threatened him with a piece of lumber. He then caused a disturbance on the subway that resulted in a 32-minute delay, the release added. Lavoie later pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon. In the other recent case, Stefon Edwards, 22, pleaded guilty to seven counts of robbery, seven counts of wearing a disguise and seven counts of using an imitation firearm, related to a string of armed robberies in April 2015. On April 3 and 25, Edwards and five other suspects robbed three TTC collectors with masks and guns, among other robberies. Edwards is to serve seven years in prison, the TTC said.
