Mining company fined $85,400 for worker’s leg injury in 2014

SASKATOON, Sask. – A worker injury at a potash mine three years ago has resulted in an $85,400 fine, including a $24,400 surcharge, for mining firm Mosaic Potash Colonsay ULC. A news release from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety stated that the incident had taken place near Colonsay on Feb. 7, 2014, when a conveyor crushed an employee’s leg, causing serious injuries. On March 21 of this year, Mosaic pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that all equipment was designed, constructed, installed, maintained and operated to perform any task safely, thereby violating subsection 22(1) of the Mines Regulations, 2003. The company was ordered to pay the fine in Saskatoon Provincial Court. “The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety works with employers and workers to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses,” the Ministry stated in the release, “by ensuring compliance with OHS legislation through education, inspections and enforcement.”
