Arm loss leads to $60,200 fine for metal company

SASKATOON, Sask. – Less than two years after an employee lost an arm in a workplace accident, Saskatoon firm B.N. Steel & Metal (2002) Inc. has been fined $60,200, including a surcharge of $17,200, for its role in the incident. According to a news release from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, the accident happened on July 1, 2015, when the worker’s arm became entangled in a metal shredder and had to be amputated above the elbow. B.N. was later charged with failing to provide an effective safeguard against dangerous moving parts in a machine, a contravention of clause 137(1)(a) of the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996. The employer pleaded guilty on March 23 of this year, the Ministry stated, noting that two additional charges were dropped.
