Officer, paramedics injured in scuffle with crash victim

CALGARY, Alta. – A road collision involving four cars hospitalized two people on the afternoon of May 29 – and two paramedics and a police officer were also injured, in a violent altercation with one of the crash victims. First responders arrived on the scene of the accident shortly after 4 p.m. that day, according to a news release from the Calgary Police Service (CPS). An agitated man who had been injured in the collision confronted police and paramedics at the scene, for no immediately obvious reason. One of the paramedics was seriously injured by the man, while another paramedic and a CPS officer received minor injuries, police said. Members of Emergency Medical Services, the Calgary Fire Department and the CPS tried to restrain the man; one officer used a Taser, but it had little effect, so the man was eventually sedated and sent to the hospital. One paramedic was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. An update from the CPS, dated May 30, identified the assailant as 52-year-old Kent Douglas Wilson, who has been charged with assault, assault causing bodily harm, assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 5.
