Saskatchewan fines two employers for lack of fall protection

REGINA, Sask. – Two employers in Saskatchewan, Dalton Parisian and Aesthetic Developments Inc., have been fined for fall-protection violations in unrelated cases, according to a June 2 news release from the province’s Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety. Parisian was convicted for a Sept. 25, 2015 incident in which an employee sustained serious head injuries after falling off a roof onto a concrete driveway. On May 25 of this year, Parisian pleaded guilty in Regina Provincial Court to failing to ensure that a worker was using a fall-arrest system where he or she could fall at least three metres, and the Ministry fined him $3,750 plus a $1,500 surcharge. Also on May 25, Aesthetic was fined $1,000, plus a $400 surcharge, in Saskatoon Provincial Court for the same offence. This conviction stemmed from an inspection by an occupational health officer on Jan. 26, 2016; the officer observed that two employees were not wearing proper fall-protection gear while working on top of a two-storey home near Saskatoon. No workers were injured on that day. “Falls from heights can cause serious injuries and are easy to prevent,” the Ministry stated in the release.
