Police officer punched by man who was asking for medical help

HALIFAX, N.S. – An officer with the Halifax Regional Police (HRP) needed treatment for non-life-threatening injuries after being assaulted on the afternoon of June 4. According to an HRP media release, officers found a man lying on the grass in front of police headquarters and claiming that he needed an ambulance at 1:12 p.m. that afternoon. As he and the officers waited for emergency medical services to arrive, the man walked up to one of them; when they suggested that he sit down on the front steps of the building, he punched the officer in the face, police said. Until the assault, the man had not behaved aggressively in any way. The HRP arrested Daniel Angus Ryan, 24, and charged him with assaulting a police officer, causing bodily harm to an officer, resisting arrest and breaching probation. He made his first court appearance at Halifax Provincial Court on the afternoon of June 5, police said.
