Employer, worker fined for unrelated Saskatchewan injuries

SASKATOON, Sask. – Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety has fined a Saskatoon company and a worker from Ontario for separate incidents that left workers seriously injured. On June 14, Meridian Development Corp. was ordered to pay $40,000, plus a $16,000 surcharge, in Saskatoon Provincial Court, according to a Ministry news release. The sentence stemmed from a March 14, 2016 incident in which a glass panel fell on a worker and severely injured his leg. Meridian was fined for failing to ensure sufficient and competent supervision of all work. On the same day that Meridian was fined, a judge at Swift Current Provincial Court fined Justin C. Cox $7,500, plus a $3,000 surcharge, for a May 23, 2015 incident in which two of his co-workers sustained second-degree burns to their hands, arms, upper extremities and faces from an arc flash near Morse. Cox later pleaded guilty to failing to lock out a machine before undertaking maintenance, repairs, tests or adjustments. “Everyone is responsible to create and maintain a safe and healthy workplace,” the Ministry stated in the release. “Typical requirements include ensuring proper supervision and training of workers.”
