Serious injury spurs oh&s fine

REGINA, Sask. — MPM Construction Services Ltd. was fined $3,500 with a $1,400 surcharge after pleading guilty to failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare of a worker. The company was fined on Jan. 7, the provincial Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety said in a Jan. 20 press release. Charges were laid after an employee was seriously injured on Dec. 19, 2012, after contacting an energized underground power line. The ministry reminded employers and employees to always be aware of any underground cables or lines in an area prior to digging or excavating.
