Government pays tribute to slain soldiers at National War Memorial

OTTAWA, Ont. – The federal government held a public ceremony commemorating the Parliament Hill shootings of Oct. 22, 2014, on the one-year anniversary of the tragedy, which had claimed the life of 24-year-old sentry guard Corporal Nathan Cirillo (COHSN, Oct. 27, 2014). The ceremony began at 11 a.m. on Oct. 22 at the National War Memorial and included a 21-gun salute by the Royal Canadian Artillery’s 30th Field Artillery Regiment, as well as a flyby by CF-18 Hornets with the Royal Canadian Air Force, according to a media advisory from the Department of National Defence. Canadian Governor General and Commander in Chief David Johnston delivered an address at the ceremony, and dignitaries laid wreaths at the site. Media reports have stated that Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau also attended the ceremony, which honoured the late Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent as well as Corporal Cirillo. Officer Vincent was killed in a terror car ramming in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. two days before the Ottawa incident; Corporal Cirillo was shot by Michael Zehaf-Bibeau while on sentry duty at the Memorial’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
