Two construction companies charged over trench accident

DEAD MAN’S FLATS, Alta. – A serious worker injury two years ago has led to recent charges against two construction firms, as well as the owner of one of them, according to an undated announcement on the Alberta Ministry of Labour’s (MOL) website. The incident occurred at a worksite in Dead Man’s Flats, where a utility crew was installing a water pipeline on June 21, 2014. V.J. Bishop Excavating Ltd. and Bremner Engineering and Construction Ltd. were involved in the project. On that day, a worker was inside a straight-cut, 3.9-metre-deep trench at the site when the trench wall caved in, the MOL stated. The utility crew managed to extract the worker, who was sent to the hospital with permanent, life-altering injuries. On April 29 of this year, a total of seven charges were laid against the two companies and Vincent John Bishop: Bremner is facing three counts of violating Section 3(3) of the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and one count of violating Section 7(5), while V.J. Bishop Excavating has been charged with violating the Act as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Code, and Bishop of the latter firm is accused of contravening Section 2(2)(a) of the Act.
