LCBO ordered to pay $100,000 fine for worker injury in 2013

BRAMPTON, Ont. – A judge has found the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) guilty of failing to ensure the safety of an employee and fined the organization $100,000, plus a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge. According to a court bulletin from the provincial Ministry of Labour (MOL), a worker at an LCBO store in Brampton was injured while using a forklift to move a pallet of merchandise on April 24, 2013. The employee heard a sound while inserting the forks into a pallet and exited the forklift to investigate, and then the product fell on the employee, the MOL stated. An investigation determined that the employer had not taken sufficient precautions to protect the worker, and a subsequent trial found that the worker had not received updated training on forklift use. The trial also revealed that management at this particular LCBO location had not responded to other safety concerns from employees, according to the bulletin. On April 11 of this year, Justice of the Peace Cristina Santos passed the sentence against the employer at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
