Man arrested for pistol-whipping store employee during robbery

TORONTO, Ont. – A 33-year-old Toronto man has been charged, and two others are still wanted, for the attempted robbery of a jewellery store during which an employee and another individual were beaten in the face on Feb. 3. A Toronto Police Service (TPS) news release stated that the worker had been accosted by three men with a gun after locking up the store. The men robbed the store employee of personal belongings and pistol-whipped him in the face and head, then forced him into his vehicle, police said. A passerby tried to intervene, but the men also beat him and forced him into the vehicle. The suspects interrogated and threatened the employee while driving around the area, one of them holding the gun to his head; they returned to the store and unsuccessfully tried to force themselves inside, police said. The two captives freed themselves, escaped the vehicle and contacted the police. The store employee suffered a broken nose in the ordeal, while the passerby required several stitches to his face, police said. On May 9, the TPS arrested Luther Monroe, who is facing charges of armed robbery, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement and failure to comply with probation. Police are still looking for Terry McKnight, 23, and the TPS published a photo of him on its website on May 13; the third suspect is yet to be identified. Monroe’s first court date has been scheduled for May 16 at the Old City Hall.
