Three parties facing charges for incident from last year

HAY RIVER, N.W.T. – The occupational health and safety authority for the Northwest Territories recently laid charges against two companies and one individual, for their involvement in an unspecified workplace incident at Hay River’s Don Stewart Recreation Complex on July 26, 2016. According to a media release that the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) sent out on Aug. 11 of this year, Arctic Environmental Services Ltd. and Robert Valleau were charged on July 25 with several counts, including failing to provide sufficient information, training, and supervision to protect workers’ safety, identify the hazards of scissor lifts and ensure that supervisors had sufficient knowledge and training to protect workers. In addition, Clark Builders is facing one charge, for failing to ensure competent supervision. “The WSCC reminds all employers that their legislated workplace responsibilities include ensuring all supervisors receive training and instruction… and to have and maintain an occupational health and safety program that is current and relevant to the potential hazards,” the release stated. The parties are scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 18.
