Roofing firm fined for failure to report a worker’s injury

REGINA, Sask. – The Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety has fined a Moosomin-based roofing company $1,500, plus a $600 surcharge, for failing to report a workplace incident to the Ministry’s occupational health and safety division. The incident occurred on Nov. 22, 2015, when an employee of Hebert Metal Roofing & Exteriors Ltd. was injured and hospitalized at a worksite near Regina, according to a news release from the Ministry. The employer later pleaded guilty in Regina Provincial Court to failure to give notice as soon as possible to the oh&s division of an accident that required at least 72 hours of hospitalization. Sentence was passed on Aug. 9 of this year. “Employers and contractors are required to notify OHS if a worker sustains an injury that requires them to be in the hospital for three days or longer,” the release stated. “The notice must contain the names and contact information of the employee and the employer, the date, time and location of the incident, a description of what happened and what the apparent injuries are.”
