Two Saskatoon companies convicted for lack of protective equipment

SASKATOON, Sask. – Two local employers were fined in Saskatoon Provincial Court, on the same day, for not providing sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) in two unrelated cases. A news release from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety stated that on Aug. 10, Shannon Louise Power was fined a total of $2,800, including $800 in surcharges, for failing to ensure that employees were wearing proper head protection and using appropriate fall-arrest gear where they could have fallen at least three metres. The charges were based on a workplace inspection by an occupational health officer on June 2, 2016. Also on Aug. 10, Ram Distribution Ltd. was fined for lack of head protection, foot protection, fall-protection equipment and a written fall-protection plan, as observed during a workplace inspection on June 21, 2016. An additional charge was dropped. Ram Distribution pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay a fine of $5,600, including $1,600 in surcharges. “Falls from heights can cause serious injuries and are easy to prevent,” the Ministry stated in the release. No workers of either company were injured.
